The Whole Woman Approach
“She is clothed with strength and dignity.” Proverbs 31:25
Healing Hearts
Transforming Lives
Overcoming abuse, addiction, trafficking and homelessness doesn’t happen in a day. It takes time, prayer and hard work. Through the Whole Woman approach, residents focus on all aspects of their lives so they can fully transform. This program is designed to help single women and mothers.
“It’s been an amazing journey and I’m thankful to all the staff, the donors and the other women in the house. I feel like a totally new person in Christ.”
—Shepherd’s Gate Resident
Physical
The first step is usually helping with a nourishing meal, a shower and a safe place to sleep. We make sure they have clean clothes. Many of them haven’t received any medical attention for several years. Once immediate needs are met, we help address any other issues such as dental visits, medical checkups, vision checks, etc.
Career
Each woman is encouraged to dream and find not just a job, but a career. Through mentors and case management, the residents take the steps so they can thrive after graduation.
Volunteer
Each resident is required to complete volunteer hours for graduation. This helps build a spirit of gratitude and helps them learn how to give back to others.
Emotional
Shepherd’s Gate partners with professional therapists and counselors to help each woman to heal and overcome the trauma they’ve experienced. Each woman has a case manager who helps walk her through the process and supports her the whole way.
Recovery
Through recovery programs such as Celebrate Recovery, Psalm 23 class and others, the women overcome abuse and addiction. The classes help them gain essential tools and skills so they can change their lives. The Alumni Program also meets for relapse prevention classes and to help encourage one another.
Parenting
Many of the moms that come to Shepherd’s Gate haven’t had the opportunity to learn about Godly parenting. Some have lost custody of children. Some struggle with anger issues and other behaviors that interfere with good parenting. We come alongside the mothers with parenting courses and teaching. We mentor and co-parent with the mothers so they can learn how to be the best parent they can be.
The Child
Children have often experienced horrific trauma before coming to Shepherd’s Gate. The Children’s program helps them overcome that so they can have a bright future and be a kid.
Educational
Women complete education and life-skills classes so they can build a strong foundation and thrive once they leave Shepherd’s Gate. Whether it’s classes for obtaining a GED, gaining certification skills, learning how to budget and manage finances, they learn how to believe in themselves and know they can achieve more than they ever dreamed of before!
Legal
Many residents arrive with legal issues ranging from minor to serious. We help them move past the shame they feel and assist them to help find positive outcomes. These are often complex processes, but the women know they have help and support.
Financial
Gaining money management skills is important to helping our residents build a strong future. The women learn how to create and follow a budget, as well as save for the future.
Community
Having a strong community and support system is vital to the women’s long-term success. During their time here, residents establish a church home and build a community with volunteers, other residents and the Alumni Program.
Discipleship
Many of the women who come to Shepherd’s Gate have no religious background. The introduction to God as a loving father is foundational to their recovery. Through Bible studies and classes, they learn that they can count on God’s love and care, no matter what has happened in the past.
