Ruth fought with addiction for over 30 years.
For the sake of her children, she tried several times to quit on her own. And for a few months, she would manage. But her addiction had such a grip on her life, she would relapse.
It was even harder to escape because her husband was also addicted.
“The urge for the drug was far stronger than anything else,” she says.
Then at 49 years old, she had a stroke. The day she was released from the hospital, her husband suddenly died from his addiction.
Losing her husband helped Ruth see how devastating her addiction had become. She knew she needed to break free before it took her life, too. A friend told Ruth about Shepherd’s Gate and brought her to the campus.
Ruth joined our Christian long-term residential program and is doing incredibly well. She’s amazed at the person she’s already becoming.
But that’s not all.
Ruth is also learning life-skills that will help her thrive once she’s graduated from Shepherd’s Gate. Plus, she’s also planning to work on job-training so she can find a job helping people and giving back.
But the biggest change of all is because of friends like you believed in her and shared God’s love.
“God bless you,” Ruth says. “Just knowing someone out there cares is phenomenal.”
