Just a few days ago, someone asked me how their gifts help women who are pregnant when they come to us for safe shelter. What a great question! For women, pregnancy is a particularly vulnerable time. It may seem hard to believe, but 30% of domestic violence actually begins in pregnancy*. Without a safe place to go, these desperate women are faced with the decision to stay with their abuser, or live on the streets. Both choices put her and her baby in tremendous danger. Other pregnant women are struggling due to poverty or addiction. In every case, the sooner a woman comes to Shepherd’s Gate for help, the better!

From the moment a pregnant woman comes through our doors, they are given everything they need for a healthy pregnancy — and beyond. Your support provides far more than safe shelter and nutritious meals. You connect women with a doctor for prenatal care. You help them navigate their finances. From birth preparation classes to infant care classes to counseling, you lovingly support these women as they heal and learn to care for their child. And when the new baby arrives, mothers are often overwhelmed by your kindness: from car seats to baby clothes, to diapers . . . they see so many tangible reminders that they aren’t facing this alone. Once they are ready, women also receive quality childcare and job training so they can confidently get back on their feet again. It’s all because of the support of our friends, donors, and volunteers. It’s not just a mother’s life you’re changing — you’re creating a bright future for her baby as well.
